Venue ads begone!

(This page is in rapid development, spelling errors and other issues may be present)

Add VENUEAD to your list of blocked terms and all venue ads will be gone! Thanks to a new feature in 7.0, you can add a "blocked term" to a list. See the image below or read the patch notes themselves:https://eu.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/topics/detail/e2d4089cb8c5dcbf44f4c4ea2beb0ae8afb8654e

The venue-hosting community is currently getting everyone on the same page regarding the use of the term "VENUEAD" in all their shout advertising. Not all venues and shouters may join in on this. Feel free to blacklist those as they're not affiliated with us.

How to add the term VENUEAD?

First find your line of round icons and click "Social", then all the way on the bottom click "Term Filter".

The term filter list will pop up. Just click any line to start editing the first filter.

While venues only shout in the actual shout chat, you're safe to add VENUEAD to all chats since it's a word that won't show up in normal conversation. This also catches all the shouters who accidentally shout in Yell chat.

There are extra settings hidden behind the cog wheel button.

If you don't use any other filters, you can safely set this to "Hide the affected message in its entirety."If you keep the top option, you'll still see the message below:

Enjoy!

Information for venue owners, managers and shouters

We've been asking for this change for a very long time and it has finally arrived. We ask every venue owner, manager and shouter to consider joining this idea. Change your shouts to include VENUEAD so that any problems in the future may be avoided. In the past we've had to deal with issues regarding advertising. We need a way to let people know we exist, that we're open, and what we offer. The only options we've had for this were Shouts, Party Finder and External Sites.Shouts are very annoying but have shown to be the most effective way to get people in the door. It's why we still do the shouts despite the increasing cost of them.
Shouts are VERY annoying to whoever isn't interested in the venue scene. It has been and still is a necessary evil for us.
Party Finder is an ok alternative, albeit an annoyance to regular players. The addition of party finder as advertising for future openings is extra annoying.External sites, Discord servers and others exist, but they don't reach many players and add an extra level of administration to both venues and patrons of venues.

Anticipated problems

In the past, we've had issues with shouters being blacklisted. This resulted in shouters having to make new characters or even accounts. The price of shouting went up as well.Having spoken with many players, both in the venue scene and outside, and considering the new changes to blacklisting and muting, we anticipate the following issues:

Shouters will require second accounts

Players have expressed that they will simply blacklist -every- shouter there is.Many shouters in the past have shouted on their main character because those have access to all areas. Now, when blacklisted, ALL of their characters will be blacklisted as well as the blacklist is now fully account-wide.This may result in other issues. For example, Frontline commanders in PvP who also shout will be blacklisted by many people. Communication in dungeons and alliance raids will be hampered. Simple social interactions will be turned impossible because the blacklisted player cannot be seen.Blacklisting is jackhammer solution to a problem that can now be fixed in another way: term blocking.

Many shouters will be forced to quit shouting

Shouting was an honest job for those who did it for some extra change. Many managed to buy their medium or even large house with it

Shouting will become more expensive

Prices for shouters have risen and the amount of shouters has already gone down. It is a boring job that brings in good money but does result in blacklisting. With blacklisting becoming a bigger issue now, more shouters will stop their business and supply and demand will result in much higher prices.

Shouting will go the way of RMT, possibly legally

Since shouting will require throwaway second accounts and those accounts cannot be trial accounts, shouters will now spend extra money every month to do their shout. They may require more gil or payment in real-life currency.Whether this is legal is up for Square Enix to decide. Is it allowed to pay someone in $ or € to do something for you in-game? Or is the RMT ban only for gil?

Blacklist changes will benefit RMT and botting venues

The changes will benefit RMT and botting venues who can simply buy gil or bot for gil or bot their shouts with second accounts. This creates an unfair advantage to those venues, like many of the unfair advantages they already have and further damage the venue scene.

So what can we do about it?

We use a universally blockable term: VENUEAD

We proactively decide on a universal term. The suggestion is VENUEAD. This word is still up for debate. See below. If we include this term in every shout that we do, players who don't want to see our shouts can simply block the term "VENUEAD" in the term blocklist to hide all messages that contain this term. The shouter themselves will not have to be blacklisted.

We inform people

We also add a new line to some of the shouts explaining this concept:/sh VENUEAD Don't like to see these ads? Put VENUEAD in your term blocklist to never have to see these again! More info: https://venuead.carrd.co/

This benefits everybody

The people who don't want to see ads get the biggest benefit. The blacklist will be expanded but it won't be unlimited. If they ban every shouter, these shouters take up space on their list and they have to ban every shouter individually. If they add the term, then they won't have these issues and will only have to backlist the shouters who don't adhere to the VENUEAD term.Furthermore, players won't have to add "Club" or "Twitch" or "Tavern" or other terms to their term list. These words may still be used in day-to-day conversations and it will be really annoying to want to talk about the Haurchefant Fan Club or talk about the bar item or hotbar if the word "bar" is blocked as well."VENUEAD" is not a real word so it won't be used in regular conversations. The term list is limited to 10. We don't need to take up all 10 of those terms to block every venue shout. One term is enough. Let's all agree to use VENUEAD.

Do we use "VENUEAD"?

I've already received some critique on the word and have received some alternatives. Whatever the word may be, the site will be changed to reflect that word.Suggestions so far:

  • VENUEAD: Simple and all caps, weird enough to not be used in common conversation, complicated enough to entice people to copy-paste rather than spell it so it can't be spelled wrong accidentally.

  • V-AD: This doesn't make it clear what it is about. It needs to be beginner and outsider-proof.

  • [Venue-ad]: This is too long, it takes up valuable characters and it can be misspellt more easily.

  • Venue-ad: Adds another character, some shouters and venues may use the wrong character.

Frequently asked questions

Why would you supply them something that decreases your venue visibility?

Because the people who don't want to see your shout will blacklist you. This way they will blacklist the term and not the player who does the shouts. Whoever does your shouts for you will benefit greatly.Your visibility is impacted anyway. But this way you or your shouter will not be blacklisted. It will make blacklisting less of a burden on the shouter as well.It also provides a way to PAUSE shouts. Say a person doesn't want to see ads for a while, they can pause the shouts. If they blacklisted hundreds of people they'd have to unblacklist them. With a single keyword it becomes a toggle.

People won't care and will blacklist what they want anyway.

That is their right. Some will, maybe even many will. But not everybody will.As with the toggle example in a previous question, we as a scene can show we can come together and show that we don't actually want to spam people. It is also is a negative way of thinking. It is called Nirvana Fallacy. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nirvana_fallacyJust because some people will still blacklist doesn't mean the whole idea should be scrapped or that everybody will still blacklist. If the idea gets traction and we all follow the rule to add a keyword to our shouts, most people will likely follow along.

Thank you

Thank you for reading my ramblings.Have a nice day :D

This form is put here as an extra. You can contact the author of this page but keep in mind I barely check these. The idea stems from the Mogheart manager. You may know the big froge. If you know him you can contact him on Discord, for now you may use this as I don't want to be spammed with messages yet :p
